The ground floor of Pownall Hall is where the Century Guild’s work finds its fullest expression. This is particularly obvious in the hall, the way in to the rest of the house and the centre of the home rather than just a place for visitors to wait. Beside the front door is a small, semi-circular alcove, with cherubs’ heads in the glazing and the Latin inscription “Dominus benedicat exitum tuum et intratum tuum” (“The Lord bless thy going-out and thy coming-in,” from Psalm 121). In the main part of the hall, the windows show the signs of the Zodiac and the fireplace lintel is carved with representations of the days of the week. At the rear of the hall passage, a window showing Dante and Chaucer lights the way to the library and morning room.
The library is in two parts, with a large bay window added by Henry Boddington. Its stained glass is one of several places around the Hall where past owners are commemorated, here by the inclusion of their coats of arms. The fireplace includes a scene from Shakespeare’s As You Like It on the over-mantel, while above are depictions of the Seven Ages of Man as described in the same play. These were painted by J.D. Watson, who specialised in paintings on board or plaster, often in a pre-Raphaelite style; he was also a prolific book illustrator.:)
